Listening . . . so you don’t have to

The Left-leaning, ultra-“Woke” speaker at our annual retreat made the whole experience rather unbearable for me. Ironically, that was when this came out, so I picked it up the moment I “escaped”—sorry, Left—the retreat:

It’s not that I’m out of touch or unaware of what’s current—I simply don’t pay close attention to today’s music anymore. Still, I’ve been trying—against my better instincts and limited attention span—to keep up with some of the more “important” newer artists, as a kind of cultural obligation I never exactly signed up for. As a result, I also ended up buying Sabrina “I-Hate-Men” Carpenter’s entire discography:

Yes, it’s definitely offensive or demeaning, but I also think the infamous cover of her latest album is genuinely funny:

I’ve also been listening to Benson Boone, too:

And yet, no matter how much I try to keep an open mind, I simply cannot feel today’s music. It’s not just that something seems to be missing; there’s a deeper sense that something is fundamentally wrong and ugly.

Which, of course, makes it all the more strange that I genuinely like Taylor Swift and actually enjoyed The Life of a Showgirl.
