Character
We like to think of ourselves as good people. Above all, we want others to think so, too. We profess noble principles, cultivate appearances, and carefully conceal the less flattering aspects of our character. In doing so, we conveniently forget that human nature is a mixture of good and evil, although some people are decidedly more morally bankrupt than others.
But the bad in us cannot be concealed indefinitely. It has a way of revealing itself in the most ordinary circumstances, often when we least expect it. Sometimes deliberately, sometimes unconsciously, it slips out in little acts of selfishness, thoughtlessness, dishonesty, spite, or sheer disregard for others. We don’t have to commit some spectacular atrocity to reveal the uglier side of our nature. Sometimes all it takes is something trivial.
